The global AI landscape has shifted dramatically over the last few weeks. With the US government stepping in to restrict the release of frontier models like Fable, Mythos, and GPT 5.6 outside of a few vetted institutions, we have entered a new era. AI is no longer being treated as standard software. It is being treated as a governed strategic asset.

As a technologist, I have mixed feelings about this intervention. While national security must be taken seriously, a flat-out ban on public releases sets a worrying and unsustainable precedent for the global tech industry.

The Real Security Threat: Sophisticated Scams at Scale

Let us be completely honest: the security concerns are entirely valid. The US government is right to be cautious about unleashing these incredibly powerful models to the general public without safeguards.

We are already seeing AI being exploited to run highly sophisticated scam campaigns. Bad actors can now mimic legitimate companies, creating flawless, convincing material at an incredible scale and in a shockingly short space of time. In fact, I almost fell for one of these scams myself recently. It was that well executed. If someone who lives and breathes technology can be nearly caught out, the risk to the wider public and to standard business operations is massive.

Testing vs. Banning: Breaking the Cycle

However, a flat-out restriction on releasing these models is not the answer. Governments should not be blocking the technology from reaching the market. Instead, they should be governing and standardising the rigorous testing of these frontier models before they are launched.

The main reason for this is the sheer speed of development. The tech is not improving month by month anymore; it is changing week by week. If we think back to January of this year, we were using Opus 4.5 as our frontier model. Now we are looking at Opus 4.8, and the cycle shows no signs of slowing down.

If governments try to step in and halt a launch every single time a new model boundary is pushed, the entire system breaks down. It becomes a continuous, unmanageable cycle of panic and red tape.

The Global Blind Spot: What About GLM 5.2?

There is also a massive geopolitical blind spot in this strategy. While the US government can clamp down on American AI companies, it cannot intervene in Chinese models.

Look at GLM 5.2, for example. It has recently come close to beating Fable on benchmark scores. Whether those scores hold up under real-world scrutiny is another story, but the point remains: Chinese models are being developed and released with far fewer restrictions.

This raises a massive question. By locking down domestic technology, does the US government risk forcing its own tech businesses to miss out? If international competitors have unrestricted access to rapidly updating models while Western businesses are locked out, the competitive balance could shift entirely.

The Verdict

We will just have to wait and see how these political decisions play out on the global stage. But for businesses here in Belfast and across the UK, the advice remains the same. Do not panic about the shifting regulations. Focus on the tools we have, keep a sharp eye on security, and always look for the next opportunity to work smarter.
